The first of a series of papers describing findings from the Harvard Forest Hemlock Removal Experiment has been published in Methods in Ecology and Evolution. In this paper, Aaron Ellison, Audrey Barker-Plotkin, David Foster, and Dave Orwig describe the design and methods of analysis of this large-scale, long-term experiment aimed at understanding the effects of the hemlock woolly adelgid and preemptive salvage logging on hemlock-dominated forests. Methods in Ecology and Evolution is a new, on-line, open-access journal produced by the British Ecological Society that "promotes the development of new methods in ecology & evolution, and facilitates their dissemination and uptake by the research community." The paper by Ellison et al. is accompained by a podcast interview about the paper. This podcast was recorded live in the Prospect Hill hemlock stand, using the newly installed wireless network that will soon reach all of the Prospect Hill tract.
