For most of the central New England region, European settlement occurred largely during the 18th century, following the tragic forced removal of the Nipmuc people.

European settlers dramatically changed the land through forest clearing, hunting, and trapping. The abundance of many species changed rapidly and old-growth forests were transformed into a rural landscape.
