Harvard Forest Image Collections

The Harvard Forest Document Archives houses a large collection of visual media related to Harvard Forest research, people, properties and local area. This collection includes:

  • Historical photographs (photographs and negatives from the late 1800s into late 1900s, primarily taken by Harvard Forest staff and researchers)
  • Modern photographs (photographs from the late 1900s on, primarily taken by Harvard Forest staff and researchers)
  • Aerial photographs (Harvard Forest-related aerial photographs.  Some were taken or commissioned by Harvard Forest staff, but most were purchased from public or commercial vendors.)
  • Scrapbooks and photo albums
  • Glass lantern slides
  • 35 mm slides
  • Movie reels/DVDs

Digital Image Catalog

Some of Harvard Forest’s vast collections of photographs and negatives have been digitized and can be found in an online catalog of digital images

Diorama Images

The diorama images are freely available to download and use, with credit given to Harvard Forest. To get diorama images, go to the Diorama Gallery in PhotoShelter.
To download images from this repository:

  • Select the image you’d like to download and click the Download icon.
  • In the Download image pop-up, select the Gallery password tab, enter Forest as the password, then click the Authenticate button.
  • Choose the image format you would like from the dropdown menu, then click the Download button

Image Usage Rights

All works are licensed for use under the Creative Commons attribution CC BY-ND. The license allows for redistribution, commercial and non-commercial, as long as it is passed along unchanged and in whole, with credit to Harvard Forest.
