ASSISTANT PROGRAM COORDINATOR/RESIDENT ADVISOR
2026 Summer Research Program in Ecology
(13-week position available beginning May 18, 2026)
 
Since 1993, the Harvard Forest Summer Research Program in Ecology has been an integral part of Harvard Forest’s research and education mission. In 2026, twenty undergraduate students will join the Harvard Forest community in researching the effects of natural and human disturbances on forest ecosystems.  The Assistant Program Coordinator/Resident Advisor works closely with the Summer Program Coordinator to organize the educational components of the program, and to provide the information, advising, support, and management required to create a hospitable academic work environment.
           
Duties and Responsibilities
Working under the supervision of the Summer Program Coordinator, the Assistant Program Coordinator/Resident Advisor will be responsible for the following duties corresponding to both aspects of the role.
 
Assistant Program Coordinator
– Assist with student arrival and orientation (May 25th – 29th)
– Inform students of Harvard Forest activities, policies, and expectations
– Coordinate weekly evening workshops and seminars
– Work with Summer Program Coordinator to resolve student issues
– Organize Summer Student Symposium (August 6th)
– Work on various tasks as needed to facilitate summer research program                                                   
 
Resident Advisor
– Responsible for day-to-day activities related to the successful operation of a student residence
– Hold weekly house meetings
– Plan, organize, and direct student committees (recycling, social activities, etc.)
– Advise students on matters concerning community development and conflict resolution
 
Required Skills, Training and Experience
– Excellent listening, negotiation, organizational, and problem-solving skills
– Strong communication (verbal and written) and computer skills, comfortable using email and list-serves
– Capable of performing a variety of tasks simultaneously
– Work independently with moderate supervision
– Must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record for two years. This role is subject to a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) screening to verify driving eligibility under Harvard’s vehicle safety policies, and employment is contingent upon passing this screening.
Must have completed undergraduate degree as of Spring 2026
 
Additional Desired Qualifications
– Experience working with ethnically and culturally diverse population preferred
– Experience as a Resident Assistant/Advisor preferred
– Experience in environmental science work a plus, but note that this is an administrative, not research, position

Time Commitment and Compensation
Compensation is $18.50/hour for 40 hours per week for 13 weeks (May 18 to August 14, 2026); start date is firm and must be on-site.  The assistant has a private room and meal plan (room and board provided), shared office space with computer, and access to Harvard Forest vehicles. The position requires on-site residence with weeknight and weekend work.

TEMPORARY FIELD ASSISTANT

About the Role

Harvard Forest is seeking motivated individuals to join our team as Field Assistants to support ongoing research/current experiment based in a temperate forest plot at the Harvard Forest in Petersham, MA. This role involves hands-on fieldwork in a dynamic outdoor environment, contributing to critical forestry and ecological research under the direction of Dr. Jeannine Cavender-Bares, Professor of Biology, Harvard University. The position is ideal for individuals who enjoy physical labor, have an interest in environmental sciences, and are eager to work as part of a collaborative team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plant and measure saplings as part of ongoing research projects.
  • Conduct weeding and apply wood chips (mulching) to maintain the plots’ health. Measure saplings and keep records of data on a digital platform (tablet or telephone). Perform physical labor in various weather conditions, including in summer heat.
  • Collaborate with researchers and other team members to ensure tasks are completed efficiently.
  • Follow safety protocols and maintain a clean and organized work environment.

Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older, and eligible to work in the U.S.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, bending, and working outdoors for extended periods. Walking and standing for long periods of time and carrying up to 25 lbs of field tools and equipment.
  • Previous experience in biology/ecology fieldwork, farm work, or similar outdoor labor is highly desirable.
  • Collaborative, proactive, and able to work effectively in a team. Strong problem-solving skills and a positive, amiable attitude. Interest in environmental sciences, forestry, or related fields is a plus.

Conditions

A cheerful attitude is important while working outdoors for up to 7 hours per day (9:00 am to 5:00 pm, including 1 lunch/break hour) under different weather conditions, including cold and rainy days and sweltering heat with mosquitos, ticks, and black flies (these pests may not appear until summer but might come early). The worksite is not near a building, and restroom use will be arranged by transporting people to Harvard Forest offices (half a mile down the road) as needed.

Tools and protection equipment will be provided for the performed task. Temporary employees will be supervised and accompanied at all times by Harvard University Herbaria staff and scholars during the season.

Logistics

Transportation to the work site in Petersham, Massachusetts, is the responsibility of the employee.
