Harvard Forest Receives AV Improvement Grant

Harvard Forest has received a departmental support grant from the Harvard University Tozier Fund to upgrade our audio-visual and video conferencing capabilities. The Dr. Charles H. Tozier Fund was designated to support visual education in the sciences. The grant of $40,000 is being used to install a state-of-the art video display, wall-mounted camera, audio system, and wireless microphones for video

Harvard Forest's "Mega-plot" Nears Completion

Harvard Forest researchers have nearly finished a major forest census begun in summer 2010 on a 35-hectare "mega-plot" on Prospect Hill. The mega-plot is part of a global array of plots to explore ecosystem processes, jointly established by CTFS and Harvard University's Arnold Arboretum and recently expanded by the Smithsonian Institution's Global Earth Observatory (SIGEO). Bullard Fellow Featured in the News

One of HF's new Bullard Fellows, biology professor Dawn Bazely, was recently featured in York University's daily bulletin. During her residence at the Forest over the next six months, Bazely will be finishing a book on conservation biology in Southern Ontario.

New Harvard Forest Publication: Species Associated with a Rare Native Plant, Swamp Lousewort

A new paper by Harvard Forest Postdoc Sydne Record describes plant species associated with a regionally rare hemiparasitic plant, Swamp Lousewort (Pedicularis lanceolata), across its geographic range. Sydne performed this research as part of her dissertation work with Harvard Forest Senior Research Ecologist Aaron Ellison. See the full article published in Rhodora.

60 Groups Urge Congress to Act on Conservation

In a report released last month, sixty organizations urged federal lawmakers to help meet New England's economic challenges by investing in the region's forests. The groups, convened over the past year with leadership from the Harvard Forest, outline in their report six policy opportunities to conserve forest resources and the environmental infrastructure they provide.
