LTER Student Research Funding

Beginning in 2020, research grants for undergraduate and graduate students incorporating Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) data and objectives have been awarded regularly through Harvard Forest's LTER  Student Research Grants program. All students wishing to work with the HF LTER program are welcome. No prior association with the LTER program is necessary.

This year's submission deadline is May 1, 2024.

To apply, please email the following information to Higher Education & Lab Coordinator Ben Goulet-Scott (bgoulet@g.harvard.edu):

  1. A completed proposal, with <1,000 word project description and proposed budget of up to $2,500. Priority will be given to research proposals that: (1) incorporate LTER long-term data sets, (2) advance objectives described in the LTER VI proposal (including science, education, & outreach), and (3) collaborate across one or more career stages (REU, graduate students, post docs, senior scientists, etc.). 
  2. A letter (or email) of support from your academic advisor OR an LTER Co-I sponsor. 

If funded, awardees are asked to expend the grant money within one year and must submit a short report describing the outcomes of the research at the end of the project period.

Note: Students conducting research at the Forest may arrange to stay in hostel-style facilities for $25/night.
