Microclimatic data are collected continuously within footprint areas of the flux
towers in order to (1) understand relationships between climatic and microclimatic
conditions and carbon dioxide and water vapor exchange between forest and atmosphere, (2)
to develop predictive models for the exchange rates of these gases, based on microclimate
data, (3) detect long-term trends in climate and microclimate at the sites and (4)
determine whether the response of carbon dioxide and water vapor exchange processes to
climate or microclimate is changing over time. The primary climatic and microclimatic
variables measured at these sites include: above-canopy photosynthetically active
radiation (PAR), forest understory PAR at 1 m height, total net radiation exchange
measured above the forest canopy, air temperature and relative humidity above the forest
canopy, forest understory air temperature at 20 cm and 1 m above ground level (shielded
but not ventilated thermocouple sensors, used only to estimate nighttime understory air
temperature), soil temperature at 10 cm depth, and soil moisture.

Microclimate Sensors
Air and soil temperature thermocouple sensors: Copper-constantan, hand-made from
wire supplied by Omega Engineering (Stamford, CT, USA). Photosynthetically active
radiation (PAR): LI-190 SA quantum sensors--Licor. Co-located air temperature and
relative humidity sensors: Campbell HMP 45C (replaced august 2014); Campbell CS215
(august 2014 – present). Aspirated Radiation shield: Model 43502 RM Young
(2014-present). Radiation-shielded and ventilated precision air temperature sensors
(2010-2014): Met-One, Inc., Grants Pass, OR, USA). Soil moisture sensors: Campbell
CS-616. Net radiometer: Kippen Zonen, NR-Lite (2005-2014).
Hemlock Tower
On the flux tower, the PAR and HMP 45C temperature and relative humidity sensors
are about 24 m above the ground, higher than all but a few branches of the surrounding
trees. The aspirated precision air temperature is at about 23 m above ground. The net
radiometer is about 28.5 m above ground, near the height of the sonic anemometer and
intake ports for the eddy flux system (29 m). The HK2 datalogger is 100 m from the
tower at a compass bearing of about 200 degrees, and the HK3 datalogger is 100 m from
the tower at a 230-degree bearing. Around each of these datalogger, 3 understory PAR
sensors are located at randomly chosen distances of 30 to 50 m at compass bearings of
0, 120 and 240 degrees from the datalogger. Four 10-cm deep soil temperature
thermocouples are at randomly chosen distances of 10 to 20 m due N, E, S, and W of
each datalogger. Two pairs of thermocouples that measure understory air temperature at
20 cm and 1 m above ground, shielded from radiant exchange with the sky, are at
randomly chosen distances of 10 to 20 m N and S of each datalogger.
In July 2014 all micro met sensors were moved to a new Rohan 45 GSR, 33 meter
tower. This tower is 10 meters northeast of the old walkup tower. At that time some of
the sensors were upgraded. Soil temperature thermocouple sensors: Copper-constantan,
hand-made from wire supplied by Omega Engineering (Stamford, CT, USA).
Photosynthetically active radiation (PAR): LI-190 SA quantum sensors--Licor.
Co-located air temperature and relative humidity sensors: Campbell HMP CS215.
Aspirated radiation shield and 05103 wind monitor: RM Young(Traverse City, Michigan).
Soil moisture sensors: Campbell CS-616. NR01 Four component net radiometer: Hukseflux
USA (Manorville, NY).
On the south side of the flux tower, the four component net radiometer, PAR (up
and down facing), aspirated temperature and RH are about 32 above the ground, higher
than branches of the surrounding trees. These are at the same height as the sonic
anemometer and intake ports for the eddy flux system (32 m). The mid canopy sensors
are located at 20 meters and include PAR and aspirated temperate and RH. The lower
canopy are located at 10 meters and include PAR and aspirated temperate and RH. The
wind speed and direction anemometer is located at 34 meters at the top of the
tower.
The HK2 datalogger is 100 m from the tower at a compass bearing of about 200
degrees, and the HK3 datalogger is 100 m from the tower at a 230-degree bearing.

Little Prospect Hill Tower
On the flux tower, the PAR sensor is at the level of the highest canopy branches
(about 21 m above the ground), the HMP 45C temperature and relative humidity sensor is
about 2 m higher than this, and the aspirated high precision temperature sensor is
about 24 m above ground. The net radiometer is about 27 m above ground. The LP225B
datalogger is 200 m from the tower at a compass bearing of 225 degrees, and the LP300B
datalogger is 200 m from the tower at a 300-degree bearing. Around each of these, 3
understory PAR sensors are located at randomly chosen distances of 20 to 30 m at
compass bearings of 0, 120 and 240 degrees from the datalogger. Four 10-cm deep soil
temperature thermocouples are at randomly chosen distances of 10 to 20 m due N, E, S,
and W of each datalogger. The thermocouples for soil temperature measurement are
inserted at an angle of 45 degrees from horizontal, to increase the length of buried
wire and reduce heat conduction from the surface to the buried thermocouple. Two pairs
of thermocouples that measure understory air temperature at 20 cm and 1 m above
ground, shielded from radiant exchange with the sky, are at randomly chosen distances
of 10 to 20 m N and S of each datalogger.
Microclimate and eddy covariance measurements were discontinued at this site at
the end of December of 2010.
EMS Tower
Two sets of instrumentation were established in the footprint of the EMS Flux
tower. EMS1 has 3 understory PAR sensors are located within the C3, C2, and B2 EMS
biometry plots. EMS2 has 3 understory PAR sensors are located within the F3, F2, and
E3 EMS biometry plots. Four 10-cm deep soil temperature thermocouples are at randomly
chosen distances of 10 to 20 m due N, E, S, and W of each datalogger. Two pairs of
thermocouples that measure understory air temperature at 20 cm and 1 m above ground,
shielded from radiant exchange with the sky, are at randomly chosen distances of 10 to
20 m N and S of each datalogger. Two soil moisture sensors are set to measure the top
15 cm soil north and south of the datalogger.
