Primary Interests:
K to 12 education, schoolyard field-based research, Hemlock Woolly Adelgid monitoring
HWA Objectives:
As coordinator of the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) Schoolyard program at Harvard Forest, I work to support teachers in setting up field-based ecological research at their schoolyards. The spread and impact of the hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) is one of the themes on which I am encouraging teachers to focus their studies. Our goal is for students to participate in the scientific process by collecting data on the spread of HWA. Students will learn to I.D. signs of HWA and monitor hemlock trees near their schools. They will then collect and analyze data to learn about local and regional ecological patterns related to the questions: Will the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid destroy our hemlock trees forever? How will our forest change if the hemlock population is drastically reduced?
