Primary Interests:

Ecohydrology, whole-tree sap flux measurements, transpiration

HWA Objectives:

To gain an understanding of ecohydrological response to the loss and replacement of a core species, my proposed research will consider whole-tree hydraulic controls while translating the effects of these controls across the ecosystem scale. Whole-tree measurements are well suited to determine species effects on ecosystem processes in heterogeneous forest environments. Unlike eddy flux and gauged watershed methods, whole-tree measurements estimate the transpiration component of individual species in ecosystem evapotranspiration. This research will examine the hydraulic controls exerted by individual eastern hemlock, black birch, and other species of trees and scale these controls to the ecosystem level. Estimates will be coupled with eddy flux and gauged watershed measurements to further increase our understanding of ecosystem functions.
