Conservation & Management ![]() Much of the research undertaken at the Harvard Forest merges fundamental studies in ecology and environmental sciences with more applied research on questions germane to land management and conservation biology. With the interest and support of many local to national conservation organizations and land management agencies these studies have applied historical, geographical, and biological techniques to investigate individual species, rare and uncommon assemblages of plants and animals, and entire landscapes and regions of great interest in New England and beyond. Old-Growth and DendrochronologyMany Havard Forest studies examining old-growth and second-growth forests have utilized tree cores extracted from trees to help reconstruct the history of those sites by estimating forest age structure, the intensity and frequency of forest disturbance, and successional dynamics.
