  • Opportunities for students, post-docs, and senior researchers
    • Summer internships for undergraduates are available through the Harvard Forest Summer Research Program in Forest Ecology, a National Science Foundation REU site program (2005-2010). In most years, I mentor 1-2 students to work on projects relating to foundation species and ants at the Harvard Forest, and 1 student to work on food web and spatial dynamics research using the pitcher-plant model system. Applications for these internships are due each year at the beginning of February, and must be completed on-line.
    • Graduate students can work with me in several ways.
      • The Harvard Forest offers a Masters degree (Masters of Forest Science), and students can apply to work with me on any of my ongoing research projects. Priority will be given to applications focusing on forest-related projects, such as those involving foundation species or ants.
      • I can directly supervise Ph.D. students through the Plant Biology program, the Organismic and Evolutionary Biology program, and the Department of Natural Resources Conservation at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Priority will be given to students who have obtained external funding (such as through NSF graduate fellowships or EPA Star Fellowships), or for students interested in projects for which I currently have funding. Contact me for more details.
      • I can serve on Ph.D. committees of students enrolled in the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard. Students interested in this option should identify potential Ph.D. supervisors in Cambridge, and discuss with them possibilities for joint research projects that would involve me and/or Harvard Forest facilities.
      • I can also serve on Masters and Ph.D. committees of students enrolled at other universities. If you want me to be on your committee, let me know.
    • Post-docs interested in working at the Harvard Forest need to secure their own funding. I am happy to work with potential post-docs on identifying funding opportunities and on putting together proposals on topics of mutual interest. Contact me if you want to work on a post-doc proposal.
NSF awards postdoctoral fellowships in biology; current areas supported are:

      • Biological (including Ecological) Informatics (intersections of biology, computer science, mathematics and statistics, and they physical sciences
      • Broadening participation of under-represented groups in biology and biological informatics.

NSF also awards postdoctoral fellowships in Earth Sciences, which includes many areas of ecosystem research.

Harvard also has a number of post-doctoral fellowships with annual deadlines. These include:

    • Senior researchers interested in spending time at the Harvard Forest should first read the Guidelines for Conducting Research at the Harvard Forest. The Harvard Forest annually offers Charles Bullard Fellowships to support mid-career researchers who would like to pursue projects here. Applications are due February 1st.
