                                               The Ant Colony

Ants nest in a variety of ways ~

Small nest in leaf litter         Nest in a stick

Nest in an acorn          Carpenter ant nest in dead wood

Some species of ants make large nests

that go deep underground and have

many rooms. The rooms are used for

different purposes such as food storage

and caring for larvae.

Prenolepis imparis nest

made by Dr. Walter Tschinkel

at Florida State University.
