Station 26: Lumber Comes from Big, Straight Trees
The two large white pines in the picture show the different forms trees can have. The tree on the left suffered extensive weevil damage and has the typical "cabbage" form. In 2002, it was 99 years old. It has no sawlog value. The tree on the right was 74 years old. Lines across the stem show how two sawlogs might be cut from it. Click on the label to find out how many board feet each section should make. How many trees of this size would supply the lumber to build a typical small home? ![]()
