Station 19: What the Clearcut Used to Look Like
The red pines here were part of the same plantation that was clearcut (seen on the previous station). They were left to show what the forest looked like before the harvest. Notice the straight rows, typical of many types of "farming." The stands on either side of the road started out the same, but now look quite different: the pines on the right grew well, while those on the left suffered considerable mortality, and subsequent hardwood invasion. Can you think of reasons that might cause these differences?
