Abstract:
We will study the Spatial distribution of total C, total N, pH, rock content, bulk density, soil depth and their relationship to aboveground vegetation C stocks, and species composition at both Harvard Forest and Ituri Forest in Epulu (Democratic Republic of Congo). This study will be conducted in collaboration with Dr. Eric Davidson and Dr. Nadine Laporte of the Woods Hole Research Center and with (ii) Dr. Jean-Remy Makana,World Conservation Society (WCS)- Forestry Research Program in Beni, Mr. Corneille Ewango of the “Centre d’Etudes de Recherche et Formation en Ecologie Forestirere (CEFRECOF) in Epulu, Prof. Jean-Jacques Kakuni and Mr. Michel Lokonda from the Faculty of Agronomy in Kisangani, all in Democratic Republic of Congo. At Harvard Forest, my work is a continuation of research already being conducted by Dr. Eric Davidson and his collaborators. We will collect samples along transects at Prospect Hill (no new plots will be established) and analyze them for the above named soil properties. At Ituri forest, soil samples and data on vegetation will be collected between May 15 and June 15, 2009. Soil samples for chemical analyses will be brought to United States for further analyses while other soil properties will be measured in-situ. Some soil physical properties will be measured at the Faculty of Agronomy in Kisangani, Dem. Rep. Congo:
